Her tragic murder by a gunman triggered the outpouring of emotions within Latino communities, similar to those who reacted to the death of Elvis Presley and John Lennon's. Selena was a wildly well-known Latino singer across North America. Her music transcended boundaries and brought joy to younger and more mature adults. Selena was a hot and flamboyant stage performer who was sometimes referred to by her as the Latina Madonna. On stage, Selena was a strong role model as she actively participated in antidrug and AIDS campaigning.
